Case Study - Team Development

Type of Organisation: Organisations from Mining, Design and Construction Industries

Project Requirements:
Outgoing Development Australia became involved in this project at a time where the job was in turmoil. The cost of this billion dollar project had been underestimated and deadlines were not being met. The locals in the country where the project was being built were not supportive of the job, and the management team was experiencing a high level of conflict between the client and contractors and had experienced several changes in leadership on both sides. Our brief from the Project Director of the client and contractor was to assist them in the development and implementation of strategies to firstly develop a high performing management team for the project.

Our Process:
Outgoing Development Australia recommended and implemented a regular team alignment workshop. This workshop involved the entire management team for the project meeting for one or two days. During these workshops the team was able to establish a strong behavioural agreement, in addition to this the expectations and commitments were clarified, agreed to and reviewed within this forum. Key issues were discussed and strategies for resolution were decided on and documented in the form of action plans.

Interwoven between these regular workshops a needs assessment and a team performance review was being conducted to assist in the design of the following session. The teams' performance and its increasing effectiveness were measured by gathering information through techniques including questionnaires, one on one interviews, and observation. This information was fed back to the team during each of the workshops and strategies were developed to further develop the team and increase its performance.

It became evident over time that the performance of the management team had significantly improved. These changes had also impacted on the project further down the line. Through the interventions developed, regular assessment and review and the support of great leadership internal to the project the team had shifted enormously. Outgoing Development was proud to have been a part of these changes in the team's behaviours and performance. The shifts experienced by the team allowed people to feel much more valued and respected in their work environment and ultimately a lot happier.
