Case Study - Alliance Development

Type of Organisation: Design Company, Construction Company and Local Government

Project Requirements:
The objectives in relation to this job were to firstly assist the design and construction team in winning the job. Following this, ODA was asked to design and implement a process to ensure that the team worked together effectively for the duration of the project.

This project was a high profile job in the centre of a one of Australia's capital cities. The project was being delivered using an alliance methodology, which was new to many of the people involved in the job. It was vital that this project was a success given that the job was high profile and it was the first time this government agency had used an approach where selection was based on criteria other than primarily price.

Our process:
Outgoing Development Australia designed and facilitated a series of workshop with the design and construction team to assist them to win the job. The purpose of the initial workshops was to facilitate the team through a process that would allow them to identify and document all of the points pertinent to the assessment criteria, thus submitting a high quality submission.

Once the team was notified of its success, in the first stage of the selection process the team then needed to prepare for stage two, namely the workshops. ODA once again designed and implemented as process that allowed these two separate design and construction businesses to merge together to form a team. This team was involved in several intense workshops to ensure that the team presented in the selection workshop as a high performing team.

The team then moved into the phase of doing the job with the client. ODA continued its involvement in the project for the duration of the job. Our role at this stage was to develop and implement processes that would ensure that the team adopted Alliance Principles as opposed to a more adversarial approach, throughout the duration of the project. This was achieved through regular “health checks.” These workshops allowed the team to openly discuss issues or concerns and develop strategies to ensure the project outcomes were achieved.

It is important to note that this project was the first of its kind for this client. It was the success of this project that allowed the client to gain the confidence to continue to continue to use an alliance methodology on future jobs.
